The Study of General Psychology (Index)

General Psychology is the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Included is a consideration of the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Major topics include the various perspectives from which psychologists view behavior and mental processes. They range from a study of the brain and child development to personality and psychological disorders.

Here you find my Psychology outlines, notes  and vocabulary terms for the Psychology, by David G. Myers, 7th Edition Textbook.

Listed below are some Study Guides on General Psychology topics. Major Structures of the Brain, and Operant conditioning. The web site ( http://www.ApPsychology.net ) they came from no longer exists but the information is still current.

Contemporary Approaches to Psychology

1.    Behavioral Approach emphasizes the scientific study of behavior and its environmental determinants.

2.    Psychodynamic (Psychoanalytic) emphasizes the unconscious aspects of the mind, conflict between biological instincts and society’s demands, and early family experiences.

3.    Humanistic approach stresses a person’s capacity for personal growth, freedom to choose his or her destiny, and positive qualities.

4.    Cognitive approach emphasizes the mental processes involved in knowing:  How we direct our attention, how we perceive, how we remember, as how we think and solve problems.

5.    Neuroscience approach is the brain and nervous system are central to understanding behavior, thought and emotion.

6.    Evolutionary Psychology emphasizes the importance of adaptation, reproduction, and “survival of fittest” in explaining behavior.

7.    Sociocultural approach emphasizes that culture, ethnicity, and gender are essential to understanding behavior, thought and emotion.
